Title sequence for the movie Arrival directed by Denis Villeneuve. The main objective was to create a unified story by using found footage while still keeping the same visual language referenced from the movie. The main problems addressed during this project were the ideas of non-linear time, distorted depth, and practical effects.
The process behind the whole video consisted of editing all the found footage, with the goal of them all feeling like they seamlessly could fit next to each other. I then filmed each video playing on a monitor, with a sheet of vellum in between the camera and the monitor screen. This allowed me to warp and distort the image in various ways, and create a look that wouldn’t be achievable digitally. This technique also prevented the effect from looking fake or artificial.
